Tooth Extractions

Why do I need a tooth extraction?

There can be several reasons why you might need a tooth extraction. These include severe gum disease, serious tooth decay, or a broken tooth that is beyond repair. Wisdom teeth are often removed due to their tendency to become impacted, grow at an angle, and impact your oral health. Tooth extractions may also be needed for orthodontic or cosmetic reasons.

Tooth extraction is often seen as a last resort, used to eliminate pain and infection, and restore your oral health. It is used when all other options to save your tooth, such as periodontal treatment or root canal treatment, have failed or are not suitable. At Pearl Dental Clinic, we are proud to have provided a same-day tooth extraction service for both new and registered patients since 2007.

Types of tooth extraction at Pearl Dental Clinic

Atraumatic extractions

Atraumatic dental extractions protect your remaining jawbone, preserving the socket for possible dental implant placement in the future. At Pearl Dental Clinic, we are one of the few dental practices in the UK to use the revolutionary non-traumatic Physics Forceps for tooth extractions. They apply light but constant pressure, allowing us to carefully extract even more complex teeth without causing excessive damage to the surrounding bone and soft tissue.

Surgical extractions

Surgical extractions are usually required if your teeth are badly broken, severely impacted or stuck. We have all the equipment and materials to perform surgical extractions in our clinic. It involves making an incision in the gum to successfully remove the tooth. After a more complex surgical extraction, you may need stitches to close the gum, and we usually recommend taking a few days to recover after treatment.

Wisdom tooth extractions

A wisdom tooth extraction is often required when the tooth has grown at an angle as a result of lack of room in the back of your mouth. Not all wisdom teeth need to be removed, and you will be advised on the best course of action for your individual case. If your wisdom tooth has not fully emerged but needs to be removed due to recurrent infection, we carry out a minor surgical procedure, using local anaesthetic to ensure your comfort.

What does the treatment involve?

Initially, we examine your teeth and gums, identifying your problem tooth and the best way to remove it successfully. We can use our in-house 3D CBCT scanner to view a highly detailed and accurate image of your tooth and the surrounding bone. This enables us to be very precise in our assessment and planning, especially in more complex cases.

Before your extraction, we numb the appropriate area with local anaesthetic, so you won’t feel any pain during the procedure. We make sure you are feeling relaxed and comfortable before we begin.

During the extraction procedure, you will feel some pushing and pressure, but no pain. We use advanced Physics Forceps for the best result without causing trauma to other parts of your mouth. A surgical extraction may require us to make a small incision in your gum, but you remain comfortable as the area is completely numb. We do offer sedation, if necessary.

After your extraction, we give you some tailored tips and advice for your aftercare and recovery. This usually includes a period of rest at home and how to keep the extraction site clean.

Frequently asked questions

After a tooth extraction, it is best to stick to soft foods and chew on the opposite side of your mouth. Also, avoid drinking with straws for the first few days, as this could disturb the healing process.
