Retainers are a very important part of all orthodontic treatment, used to keep your teeth in their new positions following your Invisalign treatment. Teeth have a habit of moving out of place, so you will need to wear retainers on a part time basis (usually overnight) for as long as you wish your teeth to stay straight.

Invisalign can be used for a range of orthodontic issues, including:

• Overcrowding – when there is limited space in the jaw to fit all the teeth comfortably and correctly.
• Crossbites – when the upper and lower jaws are not aligned properly.
• Underbites – the lower teeth stick out further than the upper teeth.
• Overbites – the upper teeth stick out over the lower teeth.
• Widely-spaced teeth – this is when gaps need to be closed to ensure that the teeth can be properly aligned.

Invisalign aligners are completely removable, and should be taken out for eating and drinking, and to clean your teeth. It is important to remember to put them back in your mouth afterwards, as whenever your aligners are out, your treatment is effectively on pause and the gradual forces are not at work.

Invisalign aligners are created using a uniquely developed thermoplastic material. They look similar to teeth whitening trays and have an accurate and comfortable fit in your mouth.

You should make sure you wear your Invisalign aligners for between 20 and 22 hours per day, removing them only for eating, drinking, brushing and flossing. Keep the aligners in your mouth as much as possible to avoid disrupting or lengthening your treatment.

Yes, during your Invisalign treatment you will need to visit us for an appointment every 6-8 weeks to ensure everything is progressing as planned.

Invisalign treatment is not painful. The aligners are made to your exact specifications for added comfort and no metal is present to irritate your mouth. Some patients will experience a temporary feeling of discomfort for a few days at the beginning of each new stage of treatment. However, this is not as severe as the pain felt when wearing traditional metal appliances.

Similarly to traditional orthodontic treatments, the aligners may affect the way a person talks for a short time. Some patients have reported a slight lisp for a day or two. However, as the tongue gets used to having braces in the mouth, these signs should disappear.

Due to the removable nature of Invisalign braces, you can eat and drink whatever you choose during treatment.
