Dental Hygiene

Why are hygiene appointments important?

Your oral health depends on your gums. We are best placed to look after your gum health, preventing gum disease and removing any bacteria that is already irritating your gums. Gum disease, if left untreated, can cause gums to recede and can be a contributing factor to tooth loss. As gum disease also has links to health conditions such as diabetes and heart disease, keeping your gums as healthy as possible will help your overall health as well.

The symptoms of gum disease are mild, so it is often overlooked. We carry out a check during the appointment to spot gum disease, putting us in a position to catch it before it can worsen.

Our stain removal treatments at Pearl Dental Clinic

While staining on the teeth is very common, it can make people feel uncomfortable and nervous in social situations. Some people naturally have a slight yellow or grey tinge to their teeth, but we are able to provide solutions that enable patients to smile with confidence again. With our dental hygiene treatments, you will have a healthier, brighter smile in just one visit!

Extrinsic staining

Extrinsic discolouration, which is staining found on the surface of the teeth, can be brought on as a result of poor oral hygiene and a build up of plaque. In addition to this, regular consumption of substances such as tea, coffee, red wine, curry, fried food and fizzy drinks can have a similar effect, creating a yellow or brown build-up on the surface. During your dental hygiene appointment, we use the latest AirFlow advanced stain removal system, which uses air and sodium bicarbonate combined with a water jet to clean your teeth. This system removes plaque and tartar fast and painlessly. Air polish can help to reduce teeth stains, including normally hard to remove coffee and tobacco stains.

Intrinsic staining

Intrinsic stains are found within the structure of the tooth. They can be caused by fluoride from toothpaste and present as both brown stains and white flecks. Some antibiotics can cause certain people to experience a change in the appearance of their teeth. Also, some mouthwashes contain chlorhexidine which can cause tooth discolouration. Older people could develop brown staining as a result of a thinner layer of protective enamel. Both smoking and tooth decay can cause extrinsic and intrinsic staining on the teeth. The use of tetracycline antibiotics amongst children can also cause tooth discolouration.

What happens during a hygiene appointment?

At the start of your appointment, we ask you a little about your oral care routine at home and if you have any areas of concern. We also ask about your overall general health.

The main part of your hygiene appointment involves a routine scale and polish. During the deep clean, we remove stubborn tartar from all the hard-to-reach areas of your mouth. We then professionally polish your teeth, leaving them feeling smoother, cleaner and brighter.

To finish, we will give you some advice on how to properly care for your teeth and gums. We can show you how to use interdental cleaning tools properly so you can keep up the hard work at home.
